President's Message

    May 18, 2021

    Greetings AVHRA Members!

In 2018 I attended the SHRM Annual Conference and Expo in Chicago. One of the highlights was hearing Adam Grant speak about How Non-Conformists Move the World. If you don’t know Adam, he is a faculty member at Wharton and is an organizational psychologist. He studies how we can find motivation and meaning and lead more generous and creative lives (see https://conferences.shrm.org/presenter/adam-grant). He has a podcast called Work Life with Adam Grant where he discusses all things work related, which I have found both useful and entertaining.

Recently Adam had an article published in the New York Times: There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing. According to Grant,

Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. And it might be the dominant emotion of 2021.

Grant suggests that we combat languishing by giving ourselves uninterrupted time and focusing on small goals. With small goals, we may be able to recapture the enthusiasm we are missing. I hope you’ll take some time to read the article and think about a few small goals you can incorporate into your life in the coming days.

And take some time to explore the SHRM21 Annual Conference and Expo! It’s happening September 9-21, 2021 in Las Vegas! It would provide you a great opportunity to network with the HR community, gather new information, and travel somewhere fun!

If you have suggestions about how we can better serve you, please don’t hesitate to contact me (staci@cwu.edu), or one of our other board members, directly.
