President's Message

    February 16, 2020
    Greetings AVHRA Members,

2020 is well under way!  Your AVHRA Board is working hard to provide you with ways to learn and connect this year. We are excited to announce some great opportunities for networking and advancing your HR and leadership knowledge in the weeks ahead.

    EVENTS TO CONSIDER
February 20th   -  First, we have a networking event open to all HR professionals this Thursday from 5pm to 7pm at Pybus Market.  Come on down to the Jones of Washington Tasting Room for some appetizers on us and some great conversation.  Check out our website for additional information.  We’d love to see you there!

March 13th -  2020 Washington State Employment Law and Human Resource Conference held this year at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue.   It is a packed full day conference with a variety of breakout tracks including Legal, Senior HR, Generalist, Learning and Development and more.   To register, visit: www.wastateshrm2020conference.org/rates-registration.

March 26th  -   We’ll host a Lunch and Learn panel discussion on the topic of “Implementing the new WA PFML Act – Lessons Learned So Far” with a panel of HR Directors and Board Member Erin McCool of Ogden Murphy Wallace.   Save the date and watch for more details and registration links soon.

April 17th - We are excited to offer a Lunch and Learn with business communications expert Bryan Rutberg entitled “Do Your Customers ❤ You Enough?  It is a session designed to get your HR “customers”, i.e. your business partners, to think of HR in a whole new way.  Whether you are a department of one or part of a multi-billion-dollar organization, you’ll appreciate a new perspective on your work and a refreshing new way to talk about it.   Watch for more details and registration soon.  This is one you won’t want to miss!

May will bring two more events.  First, another after hours networking event on May 21st where you can visit with and get to know more colleagues in HR.   Also, in May (Date TBD), we will address the serious and difficult topic of Workplace Violence with an “Active Shooter Training” Lunch and Learn brought to us by the Wenatchee Police Department.

WANT TO BECOME CERTIFIED AND NEED HELP?
If anyone is interested in joining the spring study group for the PHR certification, we’ll have more information at the February 20th networking event.   Can’t attend, but want more information or have questions?  Please send us a message through LinkedIn or email info.avhra@gmail.com and we’ll get back to you!

    HOW AVRHA IS GIVING BACK
If you joined us at the Employment Law Summit in December, you might have purchased an auction item.  If so, thank you for supporting AVHRA and our scholarship funds!   In December we were able to donate $1500 to the SHRM Foundation which provides academic and professional development HR scholarships.  Most recently, we donated $1000 to the Central Washington SHRM Student Chapter to help four very impressive HR seniors attend the upcoming student HR Leadership event in April in Juneau, Alaska.   You can be proud to sponsor these endeavors!

WANT TO GET MORE INVOLVED WITH AVHRA?
Come to one of our monthly Board meetings to meet the volunteer leaders who are leading AVHRA this year.  We generally meet the second Tuesday of the month from 4pm to 5pm (See Events”).   It’s a great way to get to know what we are all about and see if you’d like to get involved.   And if you have an idea or passion for a specific area, feel free to contact a Board member and volunteer your ideas and/or your time to help out!

    AVHRA President, Robin Carey
